Program Overview

A Family Physician provides personal, primary, preventive, comprehensive, continuing, and coordinated healthcare to his/her patients. This holistic care is personal and is also in relation to the patient's family, occupation and community at large.

With the role of a Family Physician in the whole healthcare system in mind, the NHG-AHPL Family Medicine Residency Program aims to provide our residents with the best training experience to become Competent and Capable Family Physicians at the end of the training.  Other than medical knowledge and patient care, the main thrust of the program is for our residents to acquire the skills for systems-based practice and practice-based learning and improvement to maintain their competency for life.  The broad-based training offered by the program also aims to enhance our residents’ effectiveness as Family Physicians in the Singapore primary care setting.

The program consists of structured clinical training and attachments, complemented by didactic lectures, workshops and tutorials. Clinical specialist rotations will include:

  • General Medicine;
  •  Paediatrics cum Paediatrics Emergency;
  •  Emergency Medicine;
  •  Geriatrics (with emphasis on community geriatrics);
  •  Mental Heath;
  •  Obstetrics and Gynaecology;
  •  General Surgery; and
  •  Orthopaedics Surgery.

Other short clinical attachments include Eye, ENT, Skin and GP clinics. These clinical attachments will have a Family Medicine emphasis so that the residents will acquire the knowledge and skills that will enhance their primary care role.

Senior residents will also have the opportunities to develop their leadership skills through active participation in projects for clinical improvements.  They will also assist in the teaching of junior residents, where applicable.

The key difference from the current MMed Training for Family Medicine is the clinical exposure to Family Medicine upon entry into the residency program for all residents. Every resident will be matched and attached to a Polyclinic from Day 1 of his/her residency.  He/she will also be assigned a mentor who will guide him/her through the weekly Polyclinic session, monitor his/her progress and provide regular feedback as part of the resident’s development.

Our Commitment to the Family Medicine Residency Program

The National Healthcare Group Polyclinics (NHGP) manages 9 polyclinics which serve a significant proportion of the population in the central, northern and western parts of Singapore. NHGP has a strong teaching culture and has been heavily involved in undergraduate and postgraduate Family Medicine training since its inception.

As part of NHGP’s commitment to Family Medicine training and development, it started a Primary Care Academy in 2007 and a Family Medicine Development Division in 2008. Teaching faculty have made study trips to England, Scotland and Australia to learn best practices and acquire new teaching skills. New, innovative and effective teaching and training methods have since been adopted where appropriate. A learning culture has also been created throughout the organization.

Our hospital partners – Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and National University Hospital (NUH) – are equally known for their strong teaching culture and long term commitment to the teaching and training of the next generation of doctors.

Our commitment to all NHG-AHPL Family Medicine Residents is that you will be provided with the best training environment to facilitate your learning and development. You can be confident of receiving the highest level of commitment from all teaching faculty and participating institutions.
