NHG-AHPL Residency

NHG-AHPL Residency comprises the busy and vibrant institutions of Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Institute of Mental Health, National Skin Centre, and National Healthcare Group Polyclinics. The volume and variety of patients that pass through our doors present excellent opportunities for you to develop your potential as a doctor.

But what sets the NHG-AHPL Residency apart is our dedication and commitment to nurturing the doctors of tomorrow. We have, to date, the highest number of clinicians who have won the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

Building on our proud tradition of teaching while embracing today's challenges, the NHG-AHPL Residency aims to educate future physicians who will care for their patients with competence and compassion, in an environment that fosters collegiality, leadership, and excellence in research.
About Us

Residency Roadmap

Your life as our Resident is planned from Day One.

A strong curriculum is in place to train you to become a proficient and competent doctor.  We look at the curriculum not only in terms of a list of syllabi, but also the correct pedagogy and assessment method to impart knowledge to you.

Competence and compassion towards our patients are equally important. We will develop in you, through role modeling, how to support our patients and their family through this difficult period, instead of just focusing on medical treatment. This holistic approach calls for a broader understanding of the practice of medicine.

Medicine today is complex and requires team effort. We will groom you as our Resident to work well within a team, and if you are called to lead one, to know the important attributes of a great leader.

Medical knowledge and technology change rapidly.  A technology cycle can be as short as three years. So it is very important that we inculcate in you the habit of continuous learning, not just for examinations, but for good and fruitful lifelong practice.

You will attain the skills to develop your career as a doctor with training in the following areas:

  •  Program and Specialty Clinical Knowledge and Skills
  •  Life Support and ICU Skills
  •  Clinical Quality and Patient Safety
  •  Communications and Teamwork
  •  Research Literacy and Health Outcome Research
  •  Ethics and Professionalism
  •  Counseling and Teaching
  •  Preparation for More Responsibilities
  •  Career Guidance

Your responsibilities will be graded based on the level of your capabilities but we will balance supervision with your freedom to explore and learn.

Teaching takes place during work, at the bedside, in the classrooms, in the skills laboratory, and even in cyberspace. In-service teaching is organized to make the most of all patient contact times.
