Career Overview
As an anaesthesiologist, you are trained to be a good all-round clinician. By means of careful physiological and pharmacological manipulations, you play a decisive role in the safe delivery of peri-operative care for surgical patients. Patients expect and deserve the best possible outcome in any operation and hence, you must be ever vigilant, and play an integral part in substantially reducing the burden of peri-operative morbidity and mortality.
By virtue of the comprehensive training in physiology and pharmacology, anaesthesiologists also have pre-eminent roles in the care of the sickest of patients (intensive care medicine) and the management of acute and chronic pain (pain medicine).
Last but not least, a good anaesthesiologist is a patient and healthcare advocate. Worldwide, anaesthesiologists are increasingly involved in patient safety, clinical governance, and organizational learning.
Aims of Program
The primary goal of the NHG-AHPL Anaesthesiology Residency Program is to provide you with a firm clinical foundation to become a safe, competent and trusted anesthesiologist. Our institutions have a strong tradition in teaching and mentoring.
Our Program Director and our faculty will educate and inspire by providing an exceptional and supportive environment for residents to practise and learn the art and science of anaesthesiology, intensive care, and pain medicine.
Anaesthesiology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital has traditionally been strong in neuro-anaesthesia; intensive care medicine including neuro-critical care; acute and chronic pain medicine; and regional anaesthesia, in particular. There is also rich clinical exposure to resuscitation, anaesthesia for polytrauma, and a range of emergency cases.
Our comprehensive program includes collaboration with other residency sponsoring institutions to provide you with the opportunity to train in the complete spectrum of sub-specialties in anaesthesiology.
The three-year Residency Program (following successful completion of the Transitional Year Residency Program) offers:
- A comprehensive clinical anaesthesia experience with thorough subspecialty rotations
- Extensive didactic training
- Capable preparation for the specialist exit examination
- Research opportunities

Frequently Asked Questions
Why anesthesiology?
Anaesthesiology is the most balanced of all medical specialties. The practice of anaesthesia, while essentially requiring good hands-on competency (think airway management, vascular access, and nerve blocks), demands sufficient intellect no less. The successful anaesthesiologist possesses an exquisite balance of practical skills as well as an analytical and cautious approach.
Where will I do my rotations?
The foundation training will be done in the Sponsoring Institution for the first 18 months of the residency program. Sub-specialized rotations will be conducted in Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the various participating sites, for example TTSH (intensive care medicine, pain medicine, regional anaesthesia, neuro-anaesthesia and neuro-critical care), Singapore General Hospital and National University Hospital (cardio-thoracic anesthesia) and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (anaesthesia for obstetrics and gynaecology).
Are there opportunities for sub-specialization?
At
the end of the residency training, you may chose to further develop your
sub-specialty interest in clinical anaesthesiology, intensive care medicine or pain medicine. This typically
involves an overseas fellowship under Health Manpower Development Programme
(HMDP) sponsorship.
